You're absolutely right; inasmuch as the religious community depicted in American media fails to understand science, the scientific community given voice by the popular media fails to understand religion. Until both sides can come to embrace the third way - that there is no end to truth-seeking - we'll continue to have petty mudslinging.

Interesting post. It's interesting that of the three "poles" you propose (1) only Raymo's view resonates with a worldview that contains the requisite humility necessary to continually unravel scientific and philosophical mysteries indefinitely and (2) only Weinberg's and Behe's views get piped into the living rooms of average Americans by mainstream media outlets. The debate between these two camps--the positivists vs. the Young-Earth apologists--is more than just some WWF-esque shouting match between continually escalating voices who take neither each others' views nor objective reality into account. It's our national pastime. It's the illusory duality that underlies our pathological "two-party" political, social, and economic (not to mention psychological and spiritual) systems.

It's time we stopped arguing about which window in a small dim room has the better view and moved the debate OUTSIDE.
